By 1876, Singer was claiming cumulative sales of two million stitching machines and had put the two millionth machine on display in Philadelphia. The preliminary patent, Patent No. 8294 of August 12, 1851, introduced one of the best machines on the market – and one of the outstanding males which have figured within the development of the sewing machine. The late Nineteen Fifties and Sixties saw a period of great change at the Clydebank manufacturing facility.
